Urban Resilience in Germany and the international area
Heat waves and intense rain are just a few examples that make it necessary for cities around the world to adapt more to future challenges and become more resilient overall. For this reason, concrete recommendations for action for urban development in Germany were adopted in May with the memorandum "Urban Resilience - Pathways to a Robust, Adaptive and Sustainable City."

Prof. Dr. Frauke Kraas is a professor for urban and social geography at the Institute of Geography, University of Cologne. Her main research interests are on megacities, urbanising processes, research on development and transformation. Her regional focus is on Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia) as well as India and China.

Hendrik Tieben is a Professor and the Director of the School of Architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). His work as architect, researcher and educator is devoted to the creation of healthy and inclusive cities. Hendrik Tieben received his architecture education in Germany, Italy and Switzerland and holds a Doctor of Science degree from ETH Zurich. He is a registered architect in Germany (AKNW) and Founding Member of the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design. Over the past years, Prof. Tieben developed a series of public space and placemaking projects to empower local communities. One of his latest projects was the global initiative “2020: A Year without Public Space under the COVID19 Pandemic”, in collaboration with the Journal of Public Space, a partner of UN Habitat.

Dr. Holger Floeting works as a scientist at the German Institute of Urban Affairs (Difu) - the research, training and information facility for German cities and municipalities - in Berlin. There he focuses on research topics such as urban transformation, social urban development and urban safety and security. He leads research projects and is responsible for the conception and implementation of advanced training events for management and specialist staff from municipalities as well as council members. At Difu he set up the research field “Urban Safety and Security”.
